EAST MIDLANDS AND EAST ANGLIAN

PHILATELIC FEDERATION

60th ANNUAL CONVENTION

At Girton College, Huntingdon Road, Cambridge

on Saturday, 21st August 2010, 10 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

hosted by

CAMBRIDGE PHILATELIC

SOCIETY

(established 1920)

Welcome from the Mayor of Cambridge

It is my very real pleasure to welcome to Cambridge the members of the East

Midlands and East Anglian Philatelic Federation. The Cambridge Philatelic

Society, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and indeed the City,

is delighted to host you at this, your 60th anniversary convention.

Cambridge – as with most historic towns – has a wealth of architecturally

interesting buildings, open spaces and beautiful scenery. This, combined with

its economic and educational profile, its high position in the regional shopping

league table and its high quality leisure and cultural activities, makes it a much

visited venue by both locals and tourists alike.

It is my wish that you will enjoy your visit to our City and that you will return to

us in the not too distant future.

I wish this annual convention and stamp fair every success.

Cllr Sheila Stuart

Mayor

EM & EAPF President’s Welcome

In my official capacity as President of the East Midlands and East Anglian

Federation of Philatelic Societies may I extend a very warm welcome to you all, at

this our 60th Annual convention.

This year the Cambridge Philatelic Society has volunteered to be our host and my

grateful thanks to them for all the hard work preparing this event in this historic

Girton College (established 1869).

I am sure we shall enjoy admiring the various club competition entries, lovingly

prepared and meeting up with old friends and making new acquaintances from

the 30 odd clubs within the Federation.

My thanks also to our loyal Dealers (without whom there would be no convention)

and hope they will have a successful and profitable day.

I have been out of action for some months now and my thanks to the Vice

President Gilbert Smith for dealing with matters arising.

I trust you will all have a very enjoyable day and be able to enhance your own

collections, with some of you encouraged to join your Local Society.

CAMBRIDGE PHILATELIC SOCIETY

The Society was founded on 22nd October 1920 by a group of enthusiastic

philatelists in the Cambridge area following letters in the local press. Twenty

people attended the inaugural meeting. At the next meeting on 12th November,

the first proper meeting, a committee of six was elected, with Dr J N Keynes

(father of John Maynard Keynes) as President.

The first few meetings were held in Ram Yard, Bridge Street (the then

Cambridge Photographic Society’s premises) and subsequent meetings have

been held at:

The Liberal Club, Downing Street

The Sidgwick Rooms, Corn Exchange Street

YMCA main hall, Alexandra Street

The Cambridgeshire Technical College

Wesley Schools Hall (1951-88), and now currently

Manchester Unity Order of Oddfellows premises, 131 Newmarket Road.

The Society hosted the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1925, 1938 and

1980.

Membership from all walks of life, town and gown, has varied over the years, as

might be expected, and presently stands at 89. Many notable collectors have

been members over the years. Meetings are held twice monthly at the

Oddfellows Hall, winter and summer, consisting of displays by visiting speakers,

one or more members, competitions for a range of trophies, and an annual

auction of members’ spare items. The circulating packet is also a means for

members to buy and sell. There is usually an attendance of around twenty at

meetings. There are sometimes exchange visits with other societies.

In addition, the Society has a comprehensive library, which members can view at

meetings, and borrow books for one month.

New members are always very welcome, and if you are interested, please

contact our Secretary, Peter Morton, via our web site:

www.cambridgephilatelicsociety.co.uk

Souvenir Postcard

A souvenir postcard will be on sale at the entrance showing some old Cambridge

postmarks. Price 50p unused or £1 with a Darwin 1st class stamp, cancelled by

the special Cambridge handstamp of Trinity Fountain, dated 21st August 2010.

Welcome to Cambridge for Girton 2010

A very warm welcome to all our visitors today on this the 60th East Midlands and

East Anglian Federation Convention and Stamp Fair.

It is a great honour for the Cambridge Philatelic Society in its 90th year to be

hosting this event.

The staging of this event has been a marvellous team effort by members of the

Cambridge Philatelic Society with help from members of other local societies

over a period of some 18 months. I wish to thank all the volunteers for their hard

work over this time.

This event would not be staged without our sponsors and advertisers and my

grateful thanks to all of them for their generous support and encouragement.

Thanks to many dealers present, some having come considerable distance to be

here today. I am only sorry that many other dealers who wished to come could

not be fitted in due to the lack of space but hopefully could be on another

occasion.

We are also very fortunate to have Cavendish Philatelic Auctions conducting free

valuations together with H.W.Wood Ltd providing insurance advice.

Thank you to the exhibitors for their entries in the various classes which cover

49 frames of excellent material.

I hope you all vote for your favourite display in the Regional Festival Trophy 2010

competition between the federation societies.

Finally I would like to thank the Mistress, Fellows, Students, the Catering

Manager and his team at Girton College who have enabled us to make this event

possible and in particular Graham Rawlings who has fielded many strange

telephone calls over this last 12 months; thanks to you all.

Above all else we hope our visitors will enjoy the day and perhaps some new

stamp collectors will emerge having been stimulated by the displays from the

many fields of interest which can be derived from philately.

John Pearce, F.R.P.S.L.

President, Cambridge Philatelic Society

located. There is access from this room to the CAFETERIA and adjacent eating

area.

There are more dealers and the 16 page Festival thematic competition in the

“OLD HALL” [ROOM B]. To reach this room, leave the Main Hall diagonally
