Spalding & District Stamp Club

Society History

The beginning of the Spalding and District Stamp Club can be traced back to Spalding Carnival Week in 1964 when the 6th Spalding St. Mary and Nicholas

scout group arranged a postage stamp exhibition in the Corn Exchange to raise funds for the restoration of Lincoln Cathedral.  Peterborough Philatelic

Society helped with the exhibition where a flyer was available asking visitors if they were interested in forming a Stamp Club.

On 19 October the first meeting of  the Stamp Club was held and it was encouraging to see that a number of people were interested.

Three Scout officers agreed to form the initial committee and one, David Smith is still a member today.

The Club is a member of the East Midlands and East Anglia Philatelic Federation and hosted their convention twice in the 1970’s. First on 2nd October 1971 and

again on 8th October 1977. We also participated in their packet scheme until it closed recently although we are still maintaining a Club packet.

Over the years the number of members has gone up and down but in recent years has been about 25 including two young members.

We have always maintained good links with other local clubs in the area, in particular we have an annual competition with the Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea Society.

Some years ago we experimented with holding meetings throughout the year and in view of the age of members it was suggested that we try an afternoon meeting.

Both changes have been successful and we now meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 2.00pm and the third Tuesday evening at 7.30pm.

We have a varied programme with visiting and Club speakers, short displays from members on a specific topic, auctions and bring and buy meetings.

All meetings are held in the Ladies Room of the Spalding Constitutional Club, Broad Street, Spalding,..
