Society History
The
Society was founded in 1978 when a small number of collectors gathered together
with a common interest in Philately. They decided to form a Society and
meetings were at first held in the Art and Design Centre of Oakham
School. The first season proved to be a success with 19 members joining, and
monthly meetings were held between September and May.
Over the years many members have left but thankfully
many more have joined, the catchment area has extended so that members now come
from both Meltom Mowbray and Stamford as well as from
the old county of Rutland.
Several venues have been used
for our meetings, and from January 2011 meetings will be held in the
Congregational Church Hall in Oakham.
We often have 50-60% of our members regularly
attending meetings. A Society competition is held annually and the winning
entries from this are those that go forward to the East Midlands Annual
Convention each year. Additionally some of our members regularly enter the
National competitions each year.
In March
1990 we acted as host to the 40th Annual Convention of the Federation in Uppingham and undoubtedly this has been our most ambitious
project. It was a challenge for our small Society but the publicity helped us
acquire new members.
We remain
a small, friendly Society with members ranging from those who enter
international competitions and are experts in their field of study to others
who take a more passive interest and enjoy the displays of visiting speakers.
