Peterborough & District Philatelic Society

Society History

The Society was founded on 9 September 1929 with an initial attendance of sixteen persons. Initially attendances flourished but then gradually diminished and in 1934 the Society was allowed to lapse. However in 1938 a letter was circulated to all those on the books in 1934 and the Society began to have meetings again.  During the Second World War activities were suspended as from 8 May 1940. In 1946 there was an enthusiastic re-birth of the Society and it has continued to flourish since then.

The Society was largely instrumental in founding the old East Midlands Federation of Stamp Clubs in 1950, linking clubs and Societies as far a field as Bedford and Boston and for many years provided several officers for the Federation.

A definitive Peterborough Philatelic Collection has been in being since 1969 and has many excellent and rare items of local postal history, much of which was donated by members. It must now rank among the most comprehensive local collections in the UK and the Society was honoured by having part of the collection on display at the B.P.E. Exhibition in September 1981.

The Society meetings are held on the first and third Thursday of the month from September to June each year at All Saints Church Peterborough.

Meetings consist of either members or visiting speaker displays or visits from neighbouring societies. A circulating club packet is available for members wishing to buy or sell stamps.

Details of the Society can be obtained from either Alan Berrisford, tel: 01733 567527 or colinhepper@aol.com.
