Society History
In
December 1937 eight people met in a private house in Northampton with the idea
of forming a philatelic society. They elected a committee and planned a
programme
for the
1939 season with meetings to be held at Wedgewood Café in Abington Street, Northampton.
The Society’s first President was Cllir.
Sidney Perkins. World War II affected the Society which was suspended from 1939
and reformed in February 7th 1946.
The first social meeting of the
Society on February 20th 1947 attracted 60 members. A junior section
was added along with the creation of a library and in 1950 the Society
Held a large exhibition that was
mounted in the Art Gallery in the Guildhall, Northampton and was opened by
motor racing star Bob Gerard and attracted 2,400 people.
The Society expanded to all areas
of Northamptonshire with meetings at Kettering, Rushden, Wellingborough, Corby
and Brackley not to mention Banbury,
Newport Pagnelll and Olney outside
the county. The Society had a very successful exchange box which helped our
membership to rise to over 300.
The Society now consists of the
Northampton branch meetings at Northampton from September to June on the first
Tuesday of each month at the
St. Georges Conservative Club, St.
Georges Avenue. Northampton and meetings at Brackley on the second Tuesday. The
meetings include a varied programme including
displays from visting speakers and
our own Society members also included are exchange visits from other societies,
an open competition for thee Nat West Trophy and the
Wilde Cup.
