Lincoln Philatelic Society
Society History
Lincoln Philatelic
Society was formed in 1950 when Mr B. Leslie Barker was the President, with Mr J.L.
Pugh serving as Vice President, alongside Mr C.F. Pearce as Secretary and Mr H.
Border the Treasurer. A number of interested people had met the year before and
agreed that the Society should meet at the Lincoln Technical
College. The first
meeting was held on the 12th January. Mr Barker was a Fellow of the Royal
Philatelic Society and was instrumental in bringing most of the Presidents of
the Society to Lincoln
over the following years. In 1970 he even persuaded the then Keeper of the
Royal Collection, Mr J.B. Marriott to come and give a display! to mark the 21st birthday of the Society, an
exhibition was held in October 1971 at the Usher Gallery in Lincoln. It included items from the National Postal Museum,
the States of Guernsey Post Office Board, the Lincolnshire Archives
Committee and displays from local Society members.
In 1997 the first of what is now a
regular feature in the Society’s calendar was held STAMP Lincs
1997 an exhibition and children’s activities at the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.
This was acknowledged as an excellent piece of team work, when the Society was
awarded a Rowland Hill Award in 1998 in that category. The ceremony took place
at BAFTA, Piccadilly on the 24th February. Again in 2000 we were
runners up in the category of community work for the Rowland Hill Awards. The
annual STAMP Lincs became a feature with both Senior
and Junior exhibitions, a Stamp Fair together with a
Children’s Fun Day all to raise funds for the Society and a local charity.
In April 2003 a joint event was
organised in addition to the STAMP Lincs Fun Day. The
East Midlands and East Anglian
Federation were hosted for their annual Convention and Competition.
The Society goes from strength to
strength and still holds STAMP Lincs each year, now
at Washingbouorgh Lincoln and the Society still meets at the Bailgate
Methodist Church Lincoln.
Lincoln P. S. joined the Federation in
1999.
History
of the Junior Section
The Lincoln Junior Stamp Club started with five
founder members in September 1997, following the Stamp Lincs
1977 earlier in the year. By the end of that year they all had achieved Gold
Stamp Active Awards. Also a collection of stamps was being put together about
fauna and flora of Lincolnshire.
During 2000 the number of members had
risen to ten. More work was being done on their collection to get ready for
display standard for London 2000, along with a members display of Space. The
club was also entered into the World Wide Thematic Exhibition in USA. These
displays were shown around local clubs in the area. By 2001 the number of
members had risen to 15. Their various displays were put in the East Midlands Federation and the British Youth
Championships Competitions.
2002 started with all newer members
having achieved Stamp Active Gold Awards. The year ended on a high with one Junior member being awarded Large Sliver in Spain which was
presented when that member displayed at the Royal Philatelic Society in London in March 2003, the
member was also awarded the Roland Hill Youth Collectors award.
As time went on a number of members
changed school and with more homework the attendance fell off, by 2005 the
Junior Section had ended.
