Society History
King’s Lynn Philatelic Society
(KLPS) was formed on Wednesday 16th February 1938 with 12 members, the
first meeting was held at the Globe Hotel in King’s Lynn under the
chairmanship of Mr H. G. Lemmon a local solicitor, included in the members in those days was Viscountess
Lady Downe who became the 1st president. Mr J Foster was elected
secretary, an office he was to hold until 1947. With one meeting per month the
subscriptions were 2/6d per annum. On 3rd
February 1941 Mr F.B. Jones was elected secretary/treasurer, the society then
ceased due to WWII and resumed 25th September 1945, the meetings
were then held in the boardroom of West Norfolk Fertilizers Company Ltd.
On 25th September 1947 Mr A.
M. Williams took over as Secretary/Treasurer, he was to hold that office until
1976 when he was made an honorary life member.

Jones was made a Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of London ( FRPSL).
In July 1948 an exhibition of 30 frames
was held in the King’s Lynn Town Hall in connection with Civic Week.
On 31st May 1949 KLPS was
affiliated to the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain. In 1950 the East
Midlands Federation of Stamp Clubs (EMFCS) was formed of which KLPS was one of
the founder members.
April 9,10,11 an exhibition was held in
the Town Hall with some 7000 stamps exhibited.
May 1956 an exhibition was held in the
town museum
October 1959 on the 21st
anniversary year of KLPS founding an exhibition was held in the museum.
June 4th 1962 subscriptions
were increased to 10/6p per annum and the meetings moved from WNF to the Wimpey
Club in Railway Road,
King’s Lynn.
16th February 1964 the
meetings moved to the Wenns hotel and 2 meetings per month were started.
1966 meetings moved to St James Boys School
in Hospital Walk. Inter society visits were cultivated and a number of class
speakers were invited to speak and display
March 9, 10, 11 1967 an exhibition was
held in the Methodist Hall, County Court Road with 122 frames on display.
A. M. Williams became president of
EMFSC, a position he held until 1976
1971 with the coming of decimalisation
the fees were raised to 75p
1972 A Mann became bulletin editor for
the EMFSC.
After 35 years the first annual dinner
was arranged for 27th April 1973 and has taken place each year
usually in June. On 6th October 1973 KLPS hosted the 22nd
EMFSC convention in King’s Lynn at the Dukes Head hotel.
Two members of KLPS, Bill Clarey and
Charley Grout worked for Dow Chemicals and were able to negotiate with Mr Mick Parsons
for the use of Dow’s canteen for the use of our meetings, in 1978 the
meetings were moved from the canteen to Dow’s training centre, We then
had one of the finest meeting venues in the area.
In 1976 Mr A.G.E. Mann was elected
Secretary/Treasurer, he also took on the job of Programme Secretary and set the
trend for a line of excellent speakers. Members David Heal, David Forgan and
Alan Pearse have all be made FRSPL’s
In 1980 A. M. Williams was awarded the
BPF Award of Merit, followed in 1984 with A.G. E. Mann being awarded a similar
Award.
23rd and 24th July
1988 on the 50th Anniversary of founding of KLPS a two day
exhibition was held at Knight Hill Hotel in which the society hosted the
EMFSC’s 38th Convention. We had 21 dealers in attendance and a
Post Office stand with Postman Pat to entertain the youngsters. A Penny Black
was given away as a lucky draw prize and
won by Oliver Smith from Cambridge, son of former KLPS member .
