Society History

In 1946 following a notice in the local paper a public meeting was chaired by Capt. F.H.L. Lewin at which the eight people present

decided to form the Society. Capt. Lewin became the first President, H.G.L. Fletcher the Chairman and A.C. Cowling the Secretary.

The Treasurer and Exchange Packet Secretary was F.D. Swan and on the committee was C.H. Wiles, the Postmaster of St. Neots.

Meetings were held on the last Friday of each month, with the exception of August, in the St. Mary’s Hall, Huntingdon. The entrance

fee was 2/6 and the annual subscription 5/-, with juniors at 1/-.

F.E. Morley (Eric) joined in 1949 and exhibited Rhodesia and was still actively engaged in stamp collecting until he passed away.

In February 1951 a Members Exhibition was organised consisting of 10 sheets of any one country or period, this actually became a

competition as “awards” were presented at the following A.G.M. In the following year the competition was dignified by an entry

form and a set of rules.

1953 was a momentous year-it was Coronation Year and an exhibition was held in Huntingdon during Coronation week.

The Society had joined the British Philatelic Association from its inception but now it became a member of the East Midlands

Federation of Stamp Clubs. Until then the speakers had been drawn from local clubs but that year a speaker from Manchester

                  gave a talk on Canada.

In 1954 Capt. Lewin was followed as President by C.H. Wiles and to mark his retirement he donated the LEWIN CUP.

In the following year Eric Morley became both President and Chairman and the first speaker from the Cambridge Society is recorded.

A Junior Cup class was now introduced (those were the days when every club had juniors). It was in 1976 that the subscription was

increased to 7/6 and twice-monthly meetings became the norm. At this time Eric presented the MORLEY CUP to the Society as an

award for the Thematic Class in the annual competitions.

The East Midlands Federation then consisted of the Peterborough, Northampton, Kings Lynn, Boston, Bedford and Huntingdon

                  Societies.

1966 was the 21st anniversary of the founding of the Society leading to the A.G.M. and Annual Convention of the E.M.Fed. being

held in the George Hotel, Huntingdon.

In 1972 the first Society Stamp Fair was in the Huntingdon Town Hall and by 1976 the Society was holding two Stamp Fairs each year.

These have since been organised for many years by David Birkert in the Church Hall, St. Ives.

It was in 1974 that the Society first held meetings at the Technical College, Huntiingdon and this continues to be its venue.

Meetings open at 7.00pm for chat and a bourse and the program starts at 7.30pm.
