Great Yarmouth Stamp Club
Stamp Club History
The Great Yarmouth Stamp Club
started life in 1947 when a few like minded stamp collectors got together, and
under the Secretary ship of
Mr Alf Hedges, formed the club.
The first meetings were held
in the old Yarmouth Library which was situated opposite the east foot of the Haven
Bridge over the River Yare.
This seemed a natural place to
hold the meetings as Alf was the Chief Librarian. In 1962 a new library was
built behind the Toll House,
(the
oldest civic building in Yarmouth, dating from 1362), and the club quickly
moved to these new premises. However in about 1981 the building was redesigned
as ‘open plan’
and
thus became unsuitable for stamp club meetings. Still keeping with the theme of
using libraries, the club then moved to Gorleston
Library which is situated across the
River Yare
just south of Yarmouth itself. During this period we were the most
Easterly stamp club in the United Kingdom, beating Lowestoft
by about 100 yards.
After a number of very happy years
it to became, for various reasons, unsuitable and a new venue was sought.
Today we find ourselves
happily ensconced in the spacious, clean, quiet and very pleasant surroundings
of the Cobholm Community Centre, which ironically is
only about
500 yards away, as the crow
flies, from our original home of 1947.
0ur membership has never been
huge by some club standards, but it is and always has
been extremely loyal, and we are all very proud of our club.
It remains a ‘Stamp Club’ as
opposed to a ‘Philatelic Society’ after a number of unsuccessful proposals to
change it’s name.
The attendance at meetings,
which averages around 80% of the total club membership, reflects the interest
and loyalty. About 20% of our members also actively display
to
Clubs and Societies throughout East Anglia and beyond, with many members
belonging to specialist and national societies and various study groups.
We have always been a very
friendly club welcoming both new members and guests. Unlike many clubs we don’t
have a break during the summer, thus having about
twenty-three
meetings a year.
I think our future looks
bright, but this is only due to the enthusiasm and willingness of the members
to take part in the activities and display and talk about the many and
varied
subjects which form part of our wonderful and fascinating hobby.
Great Yarmouth S. C. joined
the Federation in 1996.
